Sant Sujan Singh Ji Maharaj was born on October 25, 1911, in Bagh Village, Jhang District (now in Pakistan). He emerged as a prominent figure in the Sikh tradition, particularly known for his soothing and spiritual kirtan (devotional singing) performances, which inspired countless devotees.
His spiritual journey began under the tutelage of Baba Nand Singh Ji (Kaleran Wale), a revered saint known for his profound blessings and mystical experience. It was under Baba Nand Singh Ji’s guidance that Sant Sujan Singh Ji honed his innate musical talents and gained spiritual enlightenment through the art of kirtan.
Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji blessed him with the words, “Sujan Singh! You do such beautiful Kirtan. Why do you wander around? You should settle in one place and people from all over will come and listen to you in your own home”. With these words etched in his mind, Sant Sujan Singh Ji moved to Delhi in 1950, where he became a significant presence in the Sikh community, generously sharing his melodic kirtan. He engaged deeply with the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, emphasizing the importance of spiritual practice and the impact of divine music in bringing people closer to God.
His kirtan was not only a means of worship but also a tool for teaching and inspiring others. He emphasized the self-application of spiritual teachings in daily life, illustrating how to live according to Guru Nanak’s philosophy.
Sant Sujan Singh Ji Maharaj Ji’s KIRTAN were notable for their emotional depth and the profound impact they had on listeners. Maharaj Ji’s musical style integrated various elements, drawing influences from Punjabi folk traditions and Sufi music, which contributed to its resonance and appeal among diverse audiences.
Maharaj Ji gained a reputation as a “Kirtan Samrat” (Emperor of Kirtan). His Bachan’s (recordings) continue to influence kirtan practitioners and are cherished by sangat globally. Even after his passing on January 1, 1970, his legacy lives on through these Bachans, which are often referred to as “heavenly kirtan” due to their spiritual depth.
His kirtan is also remembered for its charismatic connection, blending traditional shabad (hymn) with personal expressions that captivated audiences and led many to seek deeper spiritual connections.

Sant Sujan Singh Ji was born into the home of Bhai Gian Singh and Mata Bharava Bai on 25th of October 1911 in the village of Bagh in the Jhang Maghiana district of Pakistan. Sant Ji took his initial training in music from Pandit Narotam Das Ji of Multan. Pandit Narotam Das Ji moved to Bombay following the partition in 1947 and he lived there until he passed away at the age of 106. It is said that Sant Sujan Singh Ji only spent around 6 months under the guidance of Pandit Narotam Das Ji and that he was naturally blessed with musical talent by Waheguru Ji. One of his first Kirtan performances occurred in Lahore and it created such an impact on the Sangat that the ‘Shabad bheta’ he received amounted to 105 rupees which was a huge sum in those days. Sant Ji moved to Amritsar in 1945 and during his time there, he used to perform Asa Di Vaar in Sri Harmandir Sahib. It was around this time that he got the opportunity to meet Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji who became mesmerized by his Kirtan. Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji blessed him with the words, “Sujan Singh! You do such beautiful Kirtan. Why do you wander around? You should settle in one place and people from all over will come and listen to you in your own home”. With these words etched in his mind, Sant Sujan Singh Ji moved to Delhi in 1950.
Sant Harbans Singh Ji (Saputar of Sant Sujan Singh Ji) served as the Managing Trustee of the Anand Samagam. Following his tenure, the current management is led by Sant Datar Singh Harji.
